Jim Caviezel learns to speak a dead language

Jim Caviezel who essays the role of Kainan, a humanoid alien in the forthcoming release Outlander, set to release on Feb 6th in India, had to apparently learn a dead language for his role.

Yes that’s right! Playing the role of an alien, Caviezel, who starred as Jesus in Mel Gibson’s Passion Of the Christ, was required to speak Old Norse- a dead language. In the movie, Kainan’s Alien language is in reality Old-Norse, a dead language that is the precursor to modern Icelandic, Norwegian and Swedish. Interestingly the production brought in some professors from the region and one of the few people who can actually speak the language to translate the dialogue and to teach the actors to speak it. The movie, from the makers of Lord Of the Rings stars Sophia Myles and Caviezel as an alien who comes down to Earth to protect the Viking tribe from the monster Moorwen but doesn’t actually understand the Vikings at first who speak an alien dialect and has to use a universal translator type device to teach him to speak the Viking’s language.

The movie releases on 6th February and is called Kurukshetra in the Hindi version.
